This guide outlines everything you need to know about writing a great professional statement. We recommend starting there, and below are answers to a few other professional statement FAQs!

  • Are there any styling requirements for a professional statement? Yes! Please do:
    • Write in the third person, ie “Dr. Jane Doe is a psychologist…”
    • Write at least 100 words, and no more than 300 words.
    • Add paragraphing (3-4 paragraphs are recommended!)
    • Avoid distracting elements, such as all caps, ellipses or dashes, rhetorical questions, and quotations.
  • What should I include in my professional statement? At a high level, a professional statement should include the following:
    • Paragraph 1: An overview of your credentials, services, and clientele you serve
    • Paragraph 2: A description of the treatment approaches you use and what happens in therapy with you
    • Paragraph 3: A summary of relevant professional experience
  • What should I leave out of my professional statement? It’s important to remember that a professional statement is only one part of your profile; you don’t need to include every last detail! For example, these may not be necessary to include, as they are highlighted elsewhere:
    • Logistic details such as your current availability, accepted insurances, or fees.
    • An extensive description of educational and professional qualifications.
    • Elaboration on positions held or activities outside of private practice (ie promoting a podcast, book, lecture series).
  • Can I repurpose content from my video script? Yes! This is absolutely fine, and helps to set a consistent tone throughout your profile.
  • Can I just use content from my website or other online listing? We don’t encourage using exactly duplicate content as other webpages; clients often seek out more than one source to learn about your practice, so it’s helpful for them to see unique information. And, search engines don’t typically like to see multiple webpages with the exact same content written.
